The Artist Vanguard
When I graduated from Yale University in 1981, I went around and observed the current art world and market. From what I saw, I realized that what I needed as an artist was not there. The lack of representation led me to not only create the art as a black artist, but also to create the platform and market for my art to be seen, shown, and understood.
So, I created Plum Studios in 1986 to encompass my art and vision. My art was new, shockingly different from what was being done and shown at the time twenty or thirty years ago. The general art world was pushing minimalist art, and the few black collectors were into the W.P.A. art such as Beriden, Charles White, Catliss, etc.
Today, artists, art organizations, galleries, and art groups use my art concept and business model as the new model. Oftentimes as a direct template to copy. Pseudo-intellectuals like to claim that, “It’s something that’s just in the air.” I have learned that if you are original and create something of real value, there are a number of people looking to plagiarize and commercialize your work. This is a struggle I experience and cannot avoid throughout my career.
My art work can be found in museum collections, private collections, history books, commercial businesses, and restaurants. Not only is my art progressive, but so is my business approach.
If you have a painting on a canvas, this means that you have a painting on a canvas. This does not mean it’s art. If you don’t have a Maurice Wilson from Plum Studios/Plum Studios Ltd., you may not have real art.
One should judge a tree by the fruit it bears, so try our choice fruit. Masterfully executed. Cutting edge. Modern. Afro-centric. Fine art.
Maurice Wilson, fine artist, painter, drafstman, printmaker, muralist.
